The Most Glorious Festivals of Bhutan

Amidst the spectacular creations of nature, Bhutan has held on to its religious festivals and believes in celebrating them exuberantly. These celebrations are called Tshechus. Each calendar year witnesses every temple and Dzong in the country hosting at least one Tshechu.

The beloved Guru Rimpoche who lived in the 8th century is worshipped and hailed by all. His birthday corresponds 2ith the 10th day of a said month. Tshechu literally translates to the "10th day". Ergo, various Dzongs and temples host a Tshechu on the 10th of their choice to celebrate and pay their respect to Guru Rimpoche.

Tshechu's are culturally important as the entire village or city comes together to sing, dance, drink, celebrate and receive blessings. The Tshechu's held in Paro and Thimpu is surely a spectacular sight for the sore eyes that are tired of seeing only the traffic of urban life.

Here's a list of festivals in Bhutan you should not miss!

Thimpu Tschechu

Held in the capital of Bhutan, a magnanimous festival that attracts thousands of tourists each other. The festival is held from the 10th to the 13th of August each year. It is a public holiday for Bhutan. With a lot of praying and chanting combined with dancing, it is surely something you must have never witnessed before.

Jambay Lhakhang Drup

A five-day Tshechu, this is a rather strange festival that you might enjoy. It plays host to the fire ceremony which basically consists of locals running underneath large gates on fire and spectacular masked nude dances at midnight. If spontaneity is your calling this will surely appeal to you. It is something that you won't get to witness every day, a piece of madness in this calm land of beauty and contentment.

The Haa Summer Festival

If you are inquisitive about the past and want to know more about the old-world cultures, this is for you. With soothing lakes and lush green valleys as the backdrop, this is a festival that celebrates the traditional and nomadic lifestyle of the Bhutanese people. There's a lot of colors, drinks, dancing, and history. A perfect combination for visitors to enjoy and be at ease.

The Black-Craned Festival

A perfect festival for all those lovers of Mother Nature. This is an annual event which is held to celebrate the homecoming of the endangered black-necked cranes to the Phobjikha valley. These birds fly all the way to the Phobjikha valley each winter and are welcomed by a variety of crane-themed songs and dances. A truly novel and respectful initiative of the Bhutanese people which should be witnessed and supported by tourists from all over the world.
