When you first hear about Bhutan, all you feel what I am going to do there, where the country does not even a party place or does not have fancy stuff to show to the world or add to your collection. But, this happens when you want to get your bucket list ticked, but don't do your research right. I did go through a few travel tips and articles on Bhutan, that when I realized that there is more to it than just nature or temples. It was in the second week of November when I decided to travel. Bhutan being a less-traveled destination, but is considered to be an expensive destination, so I had researched a lot of travel agents for good deals and especially for package and flight booking, as there is no direct flight option from Mumbai to Paro. Though regular flight options available from Kolkata and Delhi, and then I came across NatureWings, and I was quite lucky enough to get a direct flight option to Paro airport from Mumbai as during Diwali. NatureWings operates with Bhutan Airlines operates a direct chartered flight from Mumbai to Paro. So, finally, I booked a Bhutan Tour from NatureWings and started counting the days.
Bhutan Tour Package from Mumbai Detail Itinerary
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN BHUTAN, THE LAND OF HAPPINESS
I had a direct flight from BOM to PBH. Usually, travel in flight is
monotonous, if they are more than 2 hours. But Bhutan Airlines gave us some
beautiful sights that I am sure none of the passengers on that flight would
ever forget. The beauty of the Kanchenjunga and the Himalayan paradise is
visible right outside your windowpane.
On
reaching Paro, the height of the mountains and the turbulence faced while the landing did prove its dangerous airport title, but it was one of hell of an
experience to land in between the mountain ranges.
Well,
Bhutan is just 30 minutes ahead of India, so we didn't have that toll of time
on us. We just had glimpses of Paro, but it was exactly where our minds could
feel the happiness index rating. My first destination in Bhutan was the capital
city of Thimphu, which was a 1.5 hours drive from Paro. On the way to Paro, halt
at Chojum to take photographs of the confluence of two rivers of Bhutan, Thimphu
Chu, and Paro Chu. After reaching Thimphu, and the entire day is free to roam
around Thimphu city. We decided to check in to our hotel, Ramada Valley in
Thimphu.

Day 2: THIMPU SIGHTSEEING
We
started the day by visiting The National Memorial Chorten, or ThimpuChorten is
a site for evening prayer. The chorten or stupa built in the memory of the third king, continuously circumambulated by people, murmuring mantras and
spinning their prayer wheels.
There
is a list of sightseeing places in Thimpu, next in line was The National
Library, Sakyamuni Buddha, ChangangkhaLhakhang, Takin Zoo, The Royal Textile The museum, and a must-visit place Trashi Chhoe Dzong or the Fortress of the Glorious
Region. Situated on the west bank of Wang Chhu River, Trashi Chhoe Dzong is the
formal coronation site of the fifth King. It was reconstructed in the 1960s in a traditional Bhutanese manner, without nails or architectural plans. Overnight
at Hotel in Thimphu.

Day 3: THIMPU TO PHOBJIKHA VALLEY
The drive from Thimphu to Phobjikha Valley is
something every traveler should look forward to. There are some passes in life
that tend to become a destination rather than a mere stopover. About 3100m
above sea level, creating a place in your heart and giving your eyes a
"white" twinkle with the perfect pictures your camera could have
clicked, is the "Dochula Pass.
Then
proceeds for Phobjikha Valley, the largest and greenest valley in Bhutan. It is
a vast valley with lush greenery, and this valley is famous for Black Neck
Crane - a scarce and endangered bird species in the world. These birds migrated
from Tibet during mid-November to mid-February, and you can enjoy the Black
Neck Crane Festival on Nov 11, every year at the courtyard of Gangtey
Monastery. We were lucky to witness the Black Crane. Overnight stay at Hotel in Phobjikha Valley.
Day 4: POBJIKHA VALLEY TO PUNAKHA AND PUNAKHA SIGHTSEEING
Punakha,
a warm valley area that does not have a large population, is famous for its
paddy production. Right after we checked in our hotel, we decided to get down
with our adventure spree. The river was primary, but the rafting held us high.
After a thrilling river rafting adventure, we
visited the "palace of great happiness" – The PunakhaDzong. With a
symbol of great happiness, it is also a magnificent piece of beautiful
architecture. Photography was prohibited inside, but you would be able to see
this structure while moving around the Punakha Valley.
Amidst
all the elegance of this little town, this place is also home to the marvelous
Punakha suspension bridge, which is the second-longest suspension bridge in
Bhutan and connects the old administrative center of PunakhaDzongkhag to the
rest of the valley. This iron chain bridge has been a precursor for modern suspension
bridges in the world.
The last destination for the day was the most apprehensive one, The ChimiLhakhang –
the Fertility Temple, located on a hillock in the center of the valley, and you
can only reach there by walking across the paddy fields. This temple has
vibrant colors, as well as the mask-faced gods and goddesses. Inside the
temple, we could see couples performing the chants, and everything seemed so
real and so beautiful with the true sense of spirituality.
To
end the Punakha Trail, in the latter part of the evening, we just passed
through the local street markets, where to our surprise, we saw all the dried
vegetables like corn, chilis, pumpkins, and even yak cheese. They believe in
drying all the crops and storing it for the bad weather, as the fertility of
the land and the seasonal drifts both are very uncertain.

Day 5: PUNAKHA TO PARO
The last destination and the tourist capital of Bhutan welcomed us with good
weather, but the feeling of our trip coming to an end was not pleasant.
Post
lunch, it was time for another museum- The National Museum of Bhutan, named Ta
Dzong, which initially built as a watchtower. More than the preserves, I would
recommend going there for the cold and refreshing breeze.
One
more picture-catchy destination and the clouds and the valley gives you a
perfect landscape mode for capturing your photo. Right in that area, there's
preserves and history of the paintings, textiles, weapons, and armor and rich
and ancient artifacts. Cameras are not allowed inside the museum, so it is
better to click as many photos outside the Dzong - near the watchtower with the
perfect view of the Paro city.
The
rest of the day we spent in the local markets. One memory for life that I am
sure not all of us would be aware of is that Bhutan is the only place where
there are no traffic signals. Yes, I am sure your jaw just dropped, but it is
true. No traffic lights yet less honking with comprehensive traffic management.
Here's a tip for the shopaholics. I bought some fantastic silk fabric at a
reasonable cheaper rate. You would also find wine holders who are light in
weight and are of different sizes making your wine bottle look elegant. You
will discover scarfs and hand-woven stoles. Do bargain, and you will be able to
get your hand on more variety. Bhutanese have their specific local attire, so
we bought such silk material, which was very local and very warm.
DAY
6: TAKTSANG MONASTERY (TIGER NEST MONASTERY) HIKING
The most awaited day was here. The day reserved for hiking to the Taksang or Tiger Nest Monastery, the most
famous tourist spot in Bhutan. The Tiger
Nest Monastery is one of the Unesco Heritage and unique Monasteries of the
world. Without a doubt, a first time trip to Bhutan would not be complete without
seeing the Tiger's Nest. The monastery
Built-in the 16th century on a cliff, this beauty holds significant importance
in Bhutanese culture. Some of them also believe that God flew on a tiger's back
and has made this whole monastery by himself. Each step that you take will have
lots of photo points and prayer flags that will make you feel closer to
tranquility and serenity. There are almost five temples, each showing the
stages of life, which is exciting. One fantastic experience for life. Not only
a proud moment, but it is a sense of success when you come down towards the
last step. Your breath takes a toll, and your legs touch the cramp, but your
eyes still have the pride of achievement.
DAY 7: PARO TO CHELA-LA-PASS DAY EXCURSION
Chela La
Pass is the highest motor-able pass in Bhutan and located between Paro and Haa
Valley in Western Bhutan. The altitude of Chela La pass is around 13,000 ft
above the sea level, and it is 39 Kms from Paro and 26 Kms from Haa Valley. In
the Chele La Pass, you can always enjoy the chilled windy environment, and there
is no restaurant in the past. Only you can get Momo / Maggi kind of fast food
from a Maruti Van selling few hot and tasty quick serving foods. You can also
visit Haa Valley from there (at Extra Cost), subject to you have already permit
for Haa Valley.
Return
to Paro in the afternoon and do the authentic Bhutanese shopping from the local
Paro market. Overnight at Hotel in Paro.
Day 8: CHERISH YOUR MEMORIES
The
last breakfast in Bhutan was made right, and we had our flight back to Mumbai
from Paro. The people in Bhutan are honest, welcoming, pleasant, and joyful.
Bhutan is a place blessed with an almost magical power to transform the mind of
individuals. Now I can relate with the Bhutan brand tagline- Happiness is a
Place- assures that happiness can be available in simple things, and these
simple things you can find everywhere.
